Fuzuli, one of the largest settlements in Azerbaijan, was founded in 1827. The district was established in 1930 on the basis of the settlement called Garabulag and was named Qaryagin. The district center is Garyagin settlement and covers the villages around Gozluchay, Kondalanchay, Araz and Fuzuli-Agdam highway.

In 1959, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of our great poet Mohammad Fuzuli, the district was renamed Fuzuli district.
